Walking the Lanes of the Eden Valley

Much as I prefer walking over mountains, open fellsides and rights of way, I never mind occasional strolls around country lanes – particularly if there’s not much traffic on them. Many of the great walkers of the past – people like George Borrow, Jim Phelan, Walter Starkie etc. (do read their books if you haven’t)

A Walk to Pooley Bridge

On our last walk before Lockdown, on a beautiful Lakeland morning, we headed from Askham to Pooley Bridge, to see the new bridge which is now open. The previous bridge was destroyed in Storm Desmond, suffering the devastation that so much of Cumbria fell foul to during that disaster. We did much the same walk

Ring Cairn on Knipescar

As yesterday was a quite beautiful day, we went up to Knipescar in the Lowther Valley to try and locate the scheduled ring cairn ancient monument. And all I can say is you have to use a lot of imagination. Now, I’ve been to a lot of ring cairns in my time, particularly on Dartmoor.

Knott Rigg and Ard Crags

There can be few nicer short walks in the Lake District than the stroll along Knott Rigg and Ard Crags from Newlands Hause. Especially if you only have a little time to spare. A walk we would recommend in good weather to those new to fellwalking, with easy walking and a true mountain panorama all

On Skiddaw

I’ve long taken a great interest in the way the Victorians climbed the mountains of the Lake District, for it was in that period that Lakeland achieved its first great burst of popularity. Inspired by Wordsworth and the Romantic poets, Victorians – well, the well-heeled ones who could afford it – came in their droves.
